Do you believe in karma?
Yes!!!
That might be one of the easiest Daily Prompts I’ve answered. 😂💜
I absolutely believe that what we put into the world matters.
But my understanding of karma isn’t necessarily:“You hurt me on Tuesday, therefore something terrible will happen to you on Friday.”
Life doesn’t work that neatly.
I’ve seen good people experience terrible things, and I’ve seen people hurt others and seemingly walk away without consequences. At least consequences that we can see.
So when I say I believe in karma, I don’t mean that I’m sitting around waiting for the universe to deliver revenge on my behalf. Revenge and karma aren’t the same thing. For me, it’s more about accountability.
Our actions matter. How we treat people matters. The kindness we give matters. And so does the harm we cause.
Maybe some consequences happen during this lifetime. Sometimes they’re obvious. Sometimes they arrive years later. Sometimes perhaps we never see them at all.
But I believe there comes a point when we have to answer for the way we’ve lived. And if that doesn’t happen here? Then I believe it happens when we eventually meet our Maker. Whatever name someone gives to that moment—God, the Divine, the universe, the other side—I believe we eventually face the truth of who we were and what we did.
Not the version we told other people.
Not the excuses.
The truth.
That belief also reminds me that karma isn’t only about the bad things. Every act of kindness matters too. Every time we help someone when nobody is watching. Every time we choose compassion when cruelty would have been easier. Every time we stand beside someone who needs us.
Those things leave something behind as well. 💜
So yes, I believe in karma. But I don’t think it’s my job to administer it. Life has taught me that carrying anger around while waiting for someone else to “get what they deserve” only gives that person more space in your life. I’d rather concentrate on what I put into the world.
The rest?
That’s between them, their conscience and whatever waits beyond this life.
