Writing Prompts

The Quiet Ones

Service is not always
a uniform,
a counter,
a name badge
or a carefully rehearsed smile.

Sometimes service is coffee
placed beside tired hands
without being asked.

It is a door held open,
a meal quietly made,
a lift offered home,
a message that simply says,
I’m here.

It is waking before dawn
because someone needs you,
changing plans,
carrying bags,
waiting in corridors,
and learning that love
has its own timetable.

Some acts of service
come with medals.
Others come with
no applause at all.

Perhaps those are the ones
we should notice most—

the ordinary hands
doing extraordinary things
simply because
someone needs them.

Thank you so much, Esther. 💜 I think some of the greatest acts of service are the ones nobody ever sees — no medals, no applause, just someone quietly showing up when they’re needed. Your prompt really made me think about that. xx

Once again a beautiful reminder Maggie to notice and appreciate those little gestures that mean more than medals, applause, the little gestures of love and care.

Thank you so much. 💜 Sometimes the smallest gestures carry the greatest love — a cup of coffee, a helping hand, simply being there when someone needs us. They may never earn medals or applause, but they are often the things we remember most.
