Melissa’s Fandango Flash Fiction Challenge #395

The Gate That Remembered
Every morning, she walked down to the old iron gates.
Beyond them, the ocean stretched toward a horizon where the sky and water became one.
The gates were beautiful.
White iron twisted into flowers, circles, and delicate patterns. Someone had once spent countless hours creating them.
But a thin chain held the two halves together.
It wasn’t particularly strong.
It wasn’t even locked.
Yet nobody had opened the gates in years.
The villagers said the chain had always been there.
Some claimed it protected them from the sea.
Others believed it kept something from coming ashore.
And a few whispered that the gates had been built to keep someone from leaving.
She had never questioned it.
Until one morning, when she heard a voice.
Why do you keep coming here?
She looked around.
Nobody.
Only the waves and the gulls.
“Because I love the ocean,” she answered.
Then why don’t you go?
She looked at the chain.
“I can’t.”
Have you tried?
She reached out and touched the cold metal.
The chain slipped through her fingers.
No lock.
No knot.
Nothing holding it in place except the weight of its own existence.
She lifted it away.
The gates swung open.
A warm breeze carried the scent of salt and distant places.
For a moment, she stood perfectly still.
All those years.
All those mornings.
All those dreams of what might lie beyond.
And the only thing that had kept her there was a chain she had never thought to remove.
She stepped through.
Behind her, the gates whispered one final time.
I was never keeping you in.
I was waiting for you to realise you could leave.
And somewhere beyond the horizon, a new chapter was already waiting.
