What’s a place you visited that felt like home?
For me, it would have to be the mountains of Fataga on Gran Canaria.
There are places you visit and enjoy, places you photograph, and places you remember because of something special that happened there.
And then there are places that simply feel right.
Fataga was one of those places for me.
The mountains, the winding roads, the rugged landscape and the quiet away from the busy tourist areas.
Something about it made me feel at home.
Perhaps it’s because I grew up in Norway, surrounded by mountains and nature. The landscapes are very different, of course. Norway has its green valleys, forests and fjords, while Gran Canaria has its dramatic volcanic mountains and sun-baked hills.
But the feeling can be surprisingly similar.
Space. Silence. Mountains.
And that wonderful sense that you don’t have to be anywhere else at that particular moment.
I’ve always been more comfortable in quiet places than in crowded ones. Give me a mountain view, a little peace and perhaps a cup of coffee, and I’m quite happy.
I don’t need a packed itinerary or a long list of attractions.
Sometimes I just want to sit, look at the landscape and enjoy being there.
That’s what Fataga gave me.
A feeling of familiarity in a place that looked nothing like the country where I grew up.
And perhaps that’s the lovely thing about finding somewhere that feels like home.
It doesn’t necessarily have to resemble the place you came from.
It simply has to make something inside you say:
“Yes. I could stay here.”
