The Price of Silence
The city slept beneath a cold and colourless sky.
Beyond its walls, the stream carried the remnants of another forgotten disaster, while those responsible counted their profit behind locked doors.
They called the suffering a necessary phase.
The casualties were merely numbers.
The hungry were told to wait.
And those who questioned the decisions were dismissed as foolish dreamers.
But the greatest folly was believing that silence meant acceptance.
Some had watched it happen.
Some had turned away.
Others had become complicit, convincing themselves that doing nothing was not the same as doing wrong.
Yet evil does not always arrive with a weapon.
Sometimes it wears a respectable face, signs a document, and goes home to sleep peacefully.
Then, just before dawn, the first voice rose from the darkness.
Another followed.
And another.
Until the streets filled with people who had finally understood that their silence had a price.
The temperature began to drop, but nobody moved.
They had waited long enough.
This was not a call for vengeance.
It was a call for accountability.
A reckoning.
And as the first light touched the rooftops, the city discovered something its rulers had forgotten.
Truth does not disappear simply because nobody is willing to speak it.
It waits.
And sometimes, it takes an entire city to give it a voice.
