Weekly Prompts Weekend Challenge — Moment
Moments
19 September 2026
Life is made of moments.
Some arrive so quietly that we barely notice them.
A cup of coffee in the morning.
A cat curling up beside us.
A familiar song playing on the radio.
A sunset painting the sky above Fuerteventura.
And then there are the moments that divide our lives into before and after.
A telephone call.
A diagnosis.
An accident.
A goodbye we never expected to be the last.
Those moments can change everything in the space of a heartbeat.
I have lived through enough of them to know that life doesn’t always give us time to prepare.
Sometimes we simply have to find our way through.
One moment at a time.
But I have also learned that difficult moments do not have to define every moment that follows.
There have been days when the smallest things have kept me going.
The warmth of a horse’s breath against my hand.
My husband’s laughter.
One of our cats arriving with an unexpected offering. Usually a mouse! 😂
A song that somehow finds me at exactly the right time.
Or sitting beneath the stars, remembering that the world is so much bigger than whatever is troubling me.
These moments don’t erase the difficult ones.
They simply remind me that life still holds something beautiful.
And then there is music.
Some moments live on in photographs.
Others live in songs.
Today, while thinking about this prompt, I found myself listening to One Direction performing Moments live on The Today Show.
And suddenly, the word took on another meaning.
Watching Liam singing alongside the boys brought back that familiar mixture of happiness and sadness.
Happiness because those moments were captured.
Sadness because we cannot step back into them.
But perhaps that is one of the most beautiful things about music.
A performance may last only a few minutes, yet it can remain with us for a lifetime.
A voice can bring back memories we thought we had forgotten.
A song can make us smile and cry at the same time.
And sometimes, we discover that a moment we never personally experienced has still found a place in our hearts.
Perhaps that is what the proverb means.
Not that every difficult moment happens for a reason, or that better days are guaranteed to arrive on schedule.
But that even when life feels impossibly heavy, another moment is waiting.
One we haven’t lived yet.
One that might bring laughter.
A little peace.
An unexpected kindness.
Or simply the strength to keep going.
And sometimes, when I look back, I realise that the moments I thought were insignificant have become my most treasured memories.
So I try to notice them while I am still living them.
Take the photograph.
Sing the song.
Laugh with the people you love.
And don’t be afraid to tell them what they mean to you.
Because life isn’t only measured in years.
It is measured in moments.
And some of the smallest ones leave the deepest footprints on our hearts.
For Liam, and for all the beautiful moments that live on through music. 💜🕊️
