Three Things Challenge #MM552
Today’s three words:
WAIST•WASTE•WAITER

The Dessert Compartment 🍰
I had promised myself I would behave at the dinner party.
No going back for seconds. No filling up on bread before the starters. And definitely no dessert if I was already full.
It was a perfectly reasonable plan.
Then the food arrived.
Our host had prepared enough to feed the entire neighbourhood, and the waiter kept appearing with another delicious dish.
“Just a little more?” he asked.
“Well, it would be rude to refuse.”
By the time the main course was finished, I was sitting very upright, hoping nobody would notice that I had discreetly loosened the waistband at my waist.
Across the table, my husband caught my eye.
“You said you were only having a small dinner.”
“I did have a small dinner,” I whispered. “It just arrived in several instalments.”
He laughed.
The waiter came to clear our plates. “Would anyone like to take some leftovers home?”
“Yes, please,” I said. “It would be a shame for all this lovely food to go to waste.”
I was feeling rather pleased with my sensible decision when the waiter returned.
With the dessert menu.
I opened it.
My husband looked at me.
“You can’t possibly still be hungry.”
“I’m not.”
“Then why are you reading that?”
I pointed to the chocolate cake.
“Because dessert doesn’t count as dinner.”
The lady beside me nodded. “She’s right. It’s a separate course.”
“Exactly!”
Our host leaned forward. “And I made the cake myself.”
Well.
There was simply no polite way out of that.
“Six slices of chocolate cake, then?” the waiter asked, looking around the table.
Every hand went up.
My husband sighed and raised his too.
I smiled at him.
“See? It’s not just me.”
And that was how a dinner party full of sensible adults discovered a universally accepted truth:
No matter how full you are, there’s always room for chocolate cake.
Who am I to question the world?
