The Echoes We Carry
Some voices never truly leave us.
They settle into the walls,
hide between the pages of old books,
linger in the spaces
where laughter once lived.
A familiar song begins.
Suddenly, the years disappear.
We are standing in another room,
beneath another sky,
listening to someone
we thought we would never hear again.
An echo.
Not quite the voice itself,
yet enough to make the heart remember.
I have heard them in silence.
In the quiet before dawn,
when the world has not yet awakened
and memory speaks more clearly
than the living.
A phrase someone used to say.
A laugh.
A name spoken in a particular way.
The smallest things
can carry the longest echoes.
We imagine that time
will eventually silence them.
But time is a strange musician.
It changes the melody,
softens certain notes,
brings others forward
when we least expect them.
And sometimes,
the echo becomes louder
than the original voice.
Not because memory is perfect.
It isn’t.
We forget the exact words.
We rearrange the moments.
We fill the empty spaces
with everything we wish
we had said.
Yet somewhere beneath it all,
something remains unchanged.
The feeling.
The love.
The way a person
once made the world
sound different.
Perhaps that is what an echo really is.
Not a ghost refusing to fade.
Not a voice trapped in the past.
But the shape love leaves behind
when sound has travelled
beyond our hearing.
And when I speak their names,
when I write their stories,
when I turn remembrance into music,
I am not merely listening
to an echo.
I am giving it
somewhere new
to travel.
