For dVerse Poets Pub – Where Mish is our host.

Hello and welcome to Prosery at the pub. Mish here from mishunderstood, happy to be your host.

For today’s prosery challenge, I am choosing a line from his poem, “Starpainters”. by Gordon Downie

Here is the line to include in your Prosery:

The Starpainters are taking over now.

Prosery: Tribute to Gordon Downie

When the Starpainters Came

I went outside because sleep wouldn’t come.

The island was quiet, the mountains black against a moonless sky. Above me, thousands of stars glittered where city lights could never reach.

Then one moved.

Not falling—painting.

A silver brushstroke stretched across the darkness, followed by another, violet and gold. Constellations loosened from their ancient shapes and rearranged themselves into something almost familiar.

A doorway.

I should have been afraid.

Instead, I heard laughter—not with my ears, but somewhere inside my chest.

The Starpainters are taking over now.

The doorway widened.

For one impossible moment, shadows stood beyond it: people I had loved, animals I still missed, faces untouched by time.

No one spoke.

They didn’t need to.

Then the colours faded and the constellations returned.

I stayed beneath the stars, smiling.

Perhaps heaven doesn’t always open.

Sometimes it simply leaves the light on.

💜

Thank you so much, Mish. 💜 Your beautiful prompt immediately took me somewhere magical. I wanted the Starpainters to open a little doorway between here and wherever those we love may have gone — just long enough to remind us that perhaps the light is still on.

Thank you, Björn. 💜 That was exactly the feeling I hoped to capture — somewhere between dreaming and waking, where for a moment you’re not quite sure which world you’re standing in.

I love the way you set the scene, Maggie, with the ‘mountains black against a moonless sky’ and thousands of stars glittering ‘where city lights could never reach’, and the surprise of a star painting, the constellations rearranging themselves. I would smile too.

Thank you so much, Kim. 💜 Living somewhere with very little light pollution, I’m often amazed by how enormous the night sky can feel, so that setting came very naturally to me. And yes, I think I would smile too — especially if the stars gave me even one little glimpse of those I miss.

You’re most welcome, Maggie. 💕 We too are lucky to have little light pollution, so star gazing is something I love to do.

Thank you so much, Sherry. 💜 That glimpse was very close to my heart. I like to imagine that if such a doorway ever opened, those we have loved and lost — including our beloved animals — would all be there somewhere beyond it.

Thank you so much, Hank. 💜 I’m touched that those closing lines resonated with you. I think sometimes we look for enormous signs, when perhaps the smallest light is enough to remind us that love is still there. And yes—hope. I think we all need a little of that.
