The Haven Within

As a child,
I learned that safety was not always a place.

Sometimes it was silence.

Sometimes solitude.

Sometimes it was closing a door
and allowing the world to remain
on the other side for a while.

For years, I kept searching
for the answer to one small question:

Why?

Why do people hurt one another?
Why does anger speak louder than kindness?
Why are we so quick to judge
the wounds we cannot see?

There was frustration in never finding
an answer that made everything fit.

So eventually,
I stopped asking the world to explain itself.

Instead, I began to notice
the things that brought peace—

music,
words,
the night sky,
a quiet room,
the presence of those who ask nothing
except that I simply be myself.

And somewhere along the way,
I understood.

The cost of protecting yourself
should never be losing yourself.

We can protect the frightened child within us
without building walls so high
that love can no longer enter.

Today, my haven is not somewhere I hide.

It is something I carry.

A quiet place within myself
where the child I once was
finally knows she is safe. 💜
