Weekly Prompts Weekend Challenge – Fruitful.
Fruitful
“Don’t judge each day by the harvest you reap, but by the seeds that you plant.”
— Robert Louis Stevenson
What makes a life fruitful?
Perhaps we are too often taught to measure it by the harvest.
How much did we accomplish?
How much did we earn?
How many boxes did we tick?
What do we have to show for another day gone by?
But a seed doesn’t become a flower the day it is planted.
Some things need time.
A kind word planted today may be remembered years from now.
A child encouraged to believe in themselves may carry those words for a lifetime.
A poem may sit quietly on a page until one stranger finds it on exactly the day they need it.
A song may travel somewhere its writer will never see.
And a voice speaking for truth may feel as though it is shouting into the wind — until another voice joins it, and then another.
We don’t always get to see the harvest of the seeds we plant.
I think that is something I understand more as I grow older.
A fruitful life isn’t necessarily a perfect life, or even an easy one.
It is a life in which we keep planting.
Love.
Words.
Music.
Kindness.
Hope.
Truth.
Some seeds grow quickly.
Others wait beneath the soil through seasons we cannot understand.
And some may bloom long after we have forgotten we planted them.
So perhaps at the end of the day, the question isn’t:
What did I harvest today?
Perhaps it is simply:
What did I plant?
