What’s your best tip for budget travel?
My best tip?
Look closer to home.
When we hear the word travel, I think we often imagine getting on a plane, flying to another country, booking hotels and spending a small fortune.
But travel doesn’t necessarily have to mean going far away.
Sometimes there are wonderful places almost on your doorstep that you’ve never properly explored.
Take a different road.
Visit a village you’ve always driven past.
Pack some food and spend the day at a beach you’ve never visited.
Drive into the mountains.
Find a viewpoint, a walking trail or somewhere quiet and simply explore.
After living in the Canary Islands for 15 years, I’m still discovering places I haven’t seen before.
And some of my favourite little adventures haven’t involved expensive hotels or elaborate plans at all.
Sometimes it’s simply:
Coffee.
Something to eat.
Fuel in the car.
And let’s see where this road goes.
When I was younger and living in Norway, travelling could also mean taking the caravan and exploring somewhere new. You didn’t necessarily need an exotic destination. The journey itself was part of the experience.
Perhaps that’s why I’ve never really been someone with a checklist of countries I need to visit.
I like exploring.
And there’s a difference.
Of course, if you want to go farther away, travelling outside peak season, comparing accommodation and planning ahead can save money.
But my favourite budget tip remains the simplest:
Before spending a fortune travelling somewhere else, explore what’s around you.
You might be surprised by how much you’ve never seen.
And if I do need to travel between islands?
Give me the ferry. 🚢
It’s not only about saving money.
It’s about keeping my feet considerably closer to the ground.
