Princess Astrid — A Lifetime Beneath Four Kings 🇳🇴💔
I don’t think Norway had finished grieving yet.
Only two weeks ago, we learned that King Harald V had died. Two days ago, Norway stood still as we watched his funeral, the procession through Oslo, and his final journey to Akershus.
And now another light from the same generation has gone.
Princess Astrid, Mrs Ferner, has died at the age of 94.
This one feels especially heartbreaking.
Astrid was born in 1932, the second daughter of Crown Prince Olav and Crown Princess Märtha. Her grandfather, King Haakon VII, sat on the Norwegian throne.
She would live to see four Kings of Norway.
King Haakon VII, her grandfather.
King Olav V, her father.
King Harald V, her younger brother.
And finally King Haakon VIII, her nephew.
What an extraordinary amount of Norwegian history contained within one lifetime.
But behind the titles, ceremonies and royal photographs was also a little girl who experienced things no child should have to understand.
During the Second World War, the royal family was forced apart and into exile. Astrid, her mother and siblings eventually found safety in the United States.
Then, in 1954, tragedy struck their family again.
Crown Princess Märtha died from cancer at only 53 years old.
Astrid was just 22.
Her little brother Harald was only 17.
Suddenly, Astrid wasn’t simply a young princess grieving her mother. She stepped forward and took on many of the duties that her mother had performed, serving as Norway’s First Lady alongside her widowed father.
She carried responsibility while carrying grief.
Perhaps that is one of the things that touches me most about her story.
She wasn’t Queen. She wasn’t destined for the throne. Yet for decades she quietly stood beside the people who were.
Beside her grandfather.
Beside her father.
Beside her brother.
And eventually she lived long enough to see her nephew become King.
Then came these last heartbreaking weeks.
Her baby brother Harald died.
The brother she had known for almost nine decades.
She went to say goodbye to him. She attended his funeral. And now, only days after Norway accompanied Harald on his final journey, we have lost Astrid too.
I know we cannot say that someone literally died from a broken heart without knowing the medical facts.
But emotionally, that is where my mind goes.
A broken heart. 💔
There is something unbearably poignant about an elderly sister finding the strength to say goodbye to her little brother after a lifetime together — and then leaving so soon afterwards herself.
Astrid had already said goodbye to so many members of the family she was born into: her mother Märtha, her grandfather Haakon, her father Olav, her sister Ragnhild.
And finally Harald.
Perhaps that is why today’s news feels like more than the death of another member of the Royal Family.
It feels like the closing of a chapter.
Princess Astrid’s life stretched from the reign of the grandfather who helped carry Norway through war, through her father’s reign and her brother’s long years as King, all the way to the beginning of a new generation under Haakon.
Four Kings. One lifetime.
And behind all that history was simply Astrid — daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother and aunt.
Today my thoughts are especially with her children and grandchildren, and with a Royal Family that has barely had time to breathe between one goodbye and another.
Rest peacefully, Princess Astrid. 🕯️
Perhaps somewhere beyond all our royal titles and earthly ceremonies, there is no King, Princess or Crown at all.
Only a mother waiting for her daughter.
A father waiting for his child.
A sister waiting for her sister.
And a little brother saying,
“You came.”
