What’s the best and worst airport you’ve been to?
The worst airport experience I remember happened at Gatwick Airport in the UK.
Now, before anyone comes after me, this was about 40 years ago, so I’m definitely not reviewing Gatwick as it is today.
I was around 15 and travelling back to Norway. In those days, children didn’t necessarily have their own passports, and I was travelling on my mother’s passport.
My Greek granny had made me a special treat to take with me on the journey home.

And apparently extremely suspicious to airport security.
I was pulled aside for a security check, and one of the officers started examining the cake.
And by examining, I mean…
He demolished it. 😭😭😭
My beautiful Greek cheesecake was pulled apart while he searched through it.
When he was finished, he casually explained that he had been looking for drugs.
I wanted to scream.
Instead, teenage me stood there and cried over what remained of my granny’s cake. 💔
I understand now that airport security has a job to do.
But at 15?
I didn’t see airport security doing its job.
I saw a man murdering my cheesecake.
So Gatwick has remained permanently associated with The Great Cheesecake Massacre in my memory.
As for the best airport, I’d probably choose Fuerteventura Airport.
It’s relatively small and very easy to navigate. After living here for 15 years Gran Canaria and Fuerteventura , it’s also familiar, which makes travelling through it much less stressful.
Gran Canaria Airport is another one I find quite good. It’s much bigger, but I still find it relatively easy to navigate.
Although, if I’m completely truthful…
I don’t particularly like flying anyway.
Give me a boat.
I’ll happily travel between the islands by ferry with the ocean underneath me rather than sit thousands of metres above it wondering why humans ever decided flying through the sky was a sensible idea.
So perhaps my actual airport ranking is:
Best: Fuerteventura.
Also good: Gran Canaria.
Worst memory: Gatwick and the murder of Granny’s cheesecake.
Preferred method of travel: Get me on the bloody boat.
Some people get excited when they arrive at an airport because their holiday is beginning.
I get excited when the plane lands because…
Thank God, we’re back on the ground. 😂💜
And at least on the ferry, nobody has ever dismantled my cheesecake looking for drugs.
