For dVerse Poets Pub – Where Dora is our host.
Welcome, everyone. Dora here (Dreams from a Pilgrimage) hoping to tempt your poetic muses to sing songs of stone, be the stone as small as a pebble in a macadam pavement and a gem set in jewelry, or as towering as a mountain and cavernous as a canyon.Lyric petrology is a study of rocks that revolves around our relationship to them.I want you to write a poem featuring, if not centering, on rock or stone. The earth, so to speak, is your oyster.
Poetics: Lyric Petrologies

The Mountain Remembers
I have collected stones for years—
crystal, quartz,
small pieces of earth
that somehow asked
to come home with me.
But there is one stone
I could never carry.
Tindaya carries me.
She rises from the island
like an old thought,
volcanic bone beneath the sun,
holding footprints
where no feet remain.
Who stood here?
Who pressed the shape of themselves
into stone
and trusted time
to understand?
Perhaps they watched
the same Moon
I watch now.
Perhaps the Milky Way
spilled across their darkness
before roads,
before electric light,
before anyone thought
the stars were far away.
I place my hand
against the mountain.
Warm stone.
Wind.
Silence.
Yet something answers.
Not in words.
In bones.
In that strange recognition
that sometimes comes
when we arrive somewhere
we have never been
and still think—
I know you.
Footprints survive
where bodies cannot.
Names disappear.
Languages change.
Oceans keep moving.
Still the mountain remembers.
And when I leave,
I take no stone with me.
Some stones
are not ours
to carry.
Some stones
carry us.
Author’s note: Tindaya is a sacred mountain in Fuerteventura, Canary Islands. Locally, it is known as La Montaña Mágica — The Magic Mountain. Ancient foot-shaped engravings remain
carved into its stone.
