This week my question is;

How do you maintain your account security? By account I mean online accounts, like WP, Facebook etc!

Sunday Poser # 301- Account security

How do you maintain your account security?

I’ve learned some lessons about online security the hard way.

My first Facebook account was hacked years ago, and eventually I had to shut it down and create a new one. Since then, I’ve become much more careful about passwords, suspicious messages, links, and anything that doesn’t quite look right.

Last month I had another Facebook adventure — although this time it wasn’t hacking. Facebook blocked my account, saying I hadn’t followed their rules after I had shared some posts about Liam’s case. I appealed the decision, and thankfully my account was reopened two days later.

The Facebook page connected to my blog wasn’t so lucky. That one was permanently shut down, and eventually I decided I’d had enough and gave up on it.

Sometimes protecting your peace is a form of security too. 😂

We also get a ridiculous number of scam calls, particularly from unfamiliar international numbers, including numbers appearing to come from Italy and the Netherlands.

My rule is very simple:

If I don’t recognise the number, I don’t answer.

If it’s genuinely important, they can leave a message.

I also change my passwords when necessary — in fact, I changed my WordPress password only two days ago.

I think the biggest thing I’ve learned is never to assume an account is completely safe just because you’ve had it for years.

Use strong, different passwords.
Use two-factor authentication where possible.
Be suspicious of unexpected links and messages.
And trust your instincts when something looks wrong.

The internet is wonderful for connecting us…

but sometimes it feels as though we need three locks, an alarm system and a guard dog just to log in.

Yeah, I agree! Wonderful but also can be quite dangerous as scammers are out there on the dark web!

Absolutely true. You’ve said it so well Maggie. A password manager is a good idea and two step verification is good too.
