#WeeklyPrompts Weekend Challenge – One Day

One Day
“One day, individuals will realise they have already lived through some of the best days of their lives without knowing it at the time.” — Alan Watts
One day, you look back and realise that an ordinary day wasn’t ordinary at all.
It was a memory being made.
A laugh you didn’t know you would miss.
A voice you assumed you would hear again.
A photograph taken without ever imagining that, one day, you might look at it and remember everything surrounding that single moment.
Perhaps Alan Watts was right.
Some of the best days of our lives pass quietly while we are busy living them.
We don’t know which goodbye will become the last.
We don’t know which song will someday make our hearts ache.
And we don’t know when an ordinary moment will become something we would give almost anything to experience once more.
Today is 29 August 2026.
Liam Payne’s second heavenly birthday.
Today I didn’t want to think about investigations, unanswered questions or justice.
There are other days for that.
Today is for remembering Liam.
The young man who dreamed.
The musician who gave people songs that became part of the soundtrack to their lives.
The son, father, brother and friend who was loved long before most of the world ever knew his name.
And today, from hundreds of miles away, I watched a livestream from the bandstand in West Park, Wolverhampton.
It was beautiful.
More than 300 tributes had been sent to be displayed there.
Messages.
Photographs.
Memories.
Words written by people who may never have met one another, yet who were connected today by one person.
Watching those tributes surrounding the bandstand, something struck me.
Those weren’t simply hundreds of pieces of paper.
Every one represented a person saying:
You mattered.
You are remembered.
You are still loved.
For a little while, distance didn’t seem to matter.
I wasn’t standing in West Park, but through that livestream I could share a tiny part of what was happening there.
And yes, I cried.
But I smiled too.
Because today wasn’t about how Liam died.
Today was about how he lived.
About the music.
The laughter.
The ridiculous moments.
The kindness.
The memories.
And the countless lives touched along the way.
Perhaps one day we will understand why certain people touch our hearts so deeply.
Perhaps one day the memories will bring more smiles than tears.
And perhaps one day, when a beautiful ordinary moment happens, we will recognise it while we are still standing inside it.
Because today has reminded me of something important.
Don’t wait for one day to realise that today might be one of the days you will someday wish you could have back.
Take the photograph.
Sing the song.
Laugh too loudly.
Say I love you.
Hold the people you love a little longer.
Notice the ordinary moments.
Because we never really know which of them are quietly becoming some of the best days of our lives.
Happy heavenly birthday, Liam. 💜🕊️
29 August 1993 – 16 October 2024
Today, we remember.
And one day, perhaps the memories will hurt a little less and make us smile a little more.
Perhaps, too, the way Liam lived will always become the loudest part of his story.
💜🕊️
