The Dentist
“Open wide.”
Henry opened his mouth.
“Wider.”
Henry opened it farther.
“Just a little wider…”
Gerald watched from behind him with growing concern.
“Henry?”
“Mmmm?”
“Why is the human putting his hand in your mouth?”
Henry couldn’t answer for obvious reasons.
The human continued examining his enormous mouth while Henry stood remarkably still.
Gerald shuffled closer.
“Henry, blink twice if you’re being held hostage.”
Henry rolled his eyes.
“Oh dear,” Gerald whispered. “He’s blinking. I knew it.”
The human scratched Henry gently along the roof of his mouth.
Henry practically melted.
Gerald stared.
“Wait a minute…”
The scratching continued.
Henry tilted his head higher.
“You told me this was a dental examination!”
Henry finally closed his mouth, allowing the human to retrieve his hand.
“It is.”
Gerald narrowed his eyes.
“That looked suspiciously like a mouth massage.”
Henry looked smug.
“Premium dental care.”
Gerald pushed forward immediately and opened his mouth.
“MY TURN!”
The human laughed.
Henry sighed.
“You have to make an appointment.”
Gerald’s mouth snapped shut.
“An appointment?”
“Yes.”
“How long is the waiting list?”
Henry considered this.
“Three months.”
Gerald stared at him.
Then at the human.
Then back at Henry.
“Move.”
“No.”
“Henry.”
“No.”
“Henry, I swear, if you don’t move, I’m telling everyone about the time you were frightened by a duck.”
Henry froze.
The human looked puzzled as one enormous hippo suddenly backed away and another appeared in his place, mouth already wide open.
Gerald looked triumphant.
Sometimes you don’t need teeth problems to visit the dentist.
Sometimes you just need to know someone else is getting something you aren’t.
