Cultivated

When I hear the word cultivated, I first think of soil.
Preparing the ground.
Planting seeds.
Watering them.
Waiting patiently to see what grows.
But perhaps we cultivate ourselves in much the same way.
Every book we read plants a seed.
Every person we meet leaves something behind.
Every mistake teaches us something we probably wouldn’t have learned if everything had gone according to plan.
Over the years, I have learned that education doesn’t only happen in classrooms.
Life educates us too.
Through love and loss.
Through raising a family.
Through difficult years and unexpected changes.
Through creativity, music and words.
Through simply being curious enough to ask, Why?
Some seeds grow immediately.
Others can lie quietly inside us for years before suddenly deciding it is their time to bloom.
And some things need to be pruned away because they no longer belong in the person we are becoming.
Perhaps that is what being cultivated really means.
Not becoming perfect.
Not knowing everything.
But continuing to learn, question, create and grow.
My grandmother used to say:
“Learning and wisdom are not a heavy burden.”
The older I get, the more I understand what she meant.
We are all gardens still being cultivated.
And thankfully, none of us has to be finished blooming yet.
