For dVerse Poets Pub – Where Kim is our host.

Today’s topic :

Write a poem in the first person that begins with “Once in a lifetime”.Think of a similar three-word movement (anger/sun/love) and develop it in your poem. It can be about a real situation in your past or current life, or something that happened to someone you know, or an imagined situation.”

Poetics: Once in a Lifetime

What Silence Became

Once in a lifetime
you discover that silence
has a weight.

I know.
I carried mine for years—

carefully,
as though speaking might crack
the world
around me.

I thought silence was safety,
which became a cage,
which became a voice
waiting for its door.

And when I finally spoke—

nothing shattered.

The sky remained blue;
morning still arrived,
coffee still cooled beside me.

Only I had changed.

My voice became a window,
which became a road,
which became freedom—

and I walked it
one word at a time.

Now when silence visits,
I do not mistake it
for obedience.

Sometimes I choose quiet.

There is a difference.

Once in a lifetime
you learn that finding your voice
was never about becoming louder—

only about no longer
making yourself small.

I like how this shows that speaking your truth isn’t about being loud, but about no longer hiding who you are🙌

I agree with Ange about not being loud and not hiding who you are – the weight of silence changes for us at different times in our lives. I used to fill my world with sounds to avoid silence but have come to love it, although I have often felt as if ‘speaking might crack the world around me’. These lines resonated with me especially:

    ‘My voice became a window,
    which became a road,
    which became freedom—
    and I walked it
    one word at a time’.

Speaking up can be so hard – I struggle still. But when you break through, as you say, the world doesn’t implode after all. Maybe the old you, but that’s no bad thing! Lovely poem, it resonated with me.
