This week let’s write a poem with the words field, game and husband in it. This is another of those prompts where I randomly choose three words from a list of the top 1000 words in the English language plus a few of my favorites. Post your poems in the comments below.

Monday Poetry Prompt: Field, Game, Husband
My husband
is not a sports fan.
A game can be playing
on television
and he will happily wheel past
without even asking the score.
Football?
No.
Athletics?
No.
A field full of people
chasing a ball?
Definitely no.
Then Norway
reached the World Cup.
Suddenly—
*"What time is the game?"*
There he was,
parked in front of the television,
following every pass,
every tackle,
every chance at goal.
Norway was winning.
Two–one.
And apparently
I had married
a football fan after all.
Then—
the television screen
split itself in two.
Of course it did.
The one time
my husband actually cared
about what was happening
on a football field,
the television decided
one picture
simply wasn't enough.
*"WHAT HAPPENED TO THE TV?!"*
Buttons were pressed.
The remote was blamed.
The television was blamed.
Mercury retrograde
was definitely blamed.
And I was trying
very hard
not to laugh.
Because apparently
when Norway is winning
and your television
suddenly develops
two personalities—
there can only be
one reasonable explanation:
Mercury did it.
