Song Lyric Sunday: Different Types of Behaviour
Mr. Vain — Culture Beat (1993)
This week’s Song Lyric Sunday prompt asks us to choose a song that reflects different types of behaviour people exhibit.
Well…
I could have chosen something thoughtful and quiet.
I could have explored kindness, compassion, jealousy, generosity or trust.
Instead, I chose vanity.
🤣🤣🤣
And for anyone who prefers their Sunday music peaceful and relaxing, you might want to locate the volume control before pressing play.
Because we’re going back to 1993.
We’re going Eurodance.
We’re going with Mr. Vain by Culture Beat.
And yes, this is still one of those songs that makes me want to turn the volume UP. 🎧
Call Him Mr. Vain…
The behaviour in this song isn’t exactly difficult to identify.
Mr. Vain has confidence.
Lots of confidence.
Actually, perhaps we should call it what it is:
Ego. Vanity. Arrogance. Self-importance.
He knows what he wants, assumes everyone else wants him too, and doesn’t appear to suffer from many moments of self-doubt.
We’ve probably all met a Mr. Vain at some point in our lives.
Some of us may have met several. 🤣
Welcome Back to the 90s
Mr. Vain was released by German Eurodance group Culture Beat in 1993, with vocals from Tania Evans and rapper Jay Supreme.
The song was written by Steven Levis, Nosie Katzmann and Jay Supreme and produced by Torsten Fenslau and Peter Zweier.
And it wasn’t merely a dance-floor favourite.
It became huge.
Mr. Vain reached #1 on the UK Singles Chart and topped charts across numerous European countries. It also crossed the Atlantic and reached #17 on the US Billboard Hot 100.
It became one of the defining Eurodance tracks of the 1990s.
For me, songs like this immediately transport me back to that era.
The clubs.
My DJs days
The bass.
The dance floors.
That wonderful moment when the beat kicked in and you knew exactly what was coming next.
My musical taste has always been all over the place. I can happily listen to Vivaldi while painting, turn around and put on Dio or Def Leppard, move on to a musical, and then finish the evening with house, techno or Eurodance.
I don’t really care what genre something belongs to.
If the music makes me feel something, I’m listening.
And Mr. Vain makes me want to turn the speakers up.
Human Behaviour
Behind all that glorious 90s dance energy, though, it actually fits this week’s prompt surprisingly well.
Vanity is human behaviour.
So is confidence.
So is arrogance.
And sometimes the line separating the three is very thin indeed.
Confidence says:
I know my worth.
Vanity says:
Everyone else should know my worth too.
And Mr. Vain?
Well…
I don’t think he’s particularly worried about the distinction. 🤣
So apologies in advance to anyone expecting a gentle Sunday ballad this week.
The volume control is located somewhere on your device.
Good luck.
I’m turning mine up. 🎧🤣
🎵 Mr. Vain — Culture Beat (1993)

Call him Mr. Raider
call him Mr. Wrong
Call him Mr. Vain
Call him Mr. Raider
call him Mr. Wrong
Call him insane
He'd say: I know what I wantand I want it now
I want you cause I'm Mr. Vain
I know what I want and I want it now
I want you cause I'm Mr. Vain
Call me Raider call me Wrong
Call me insane call me Mr. Vain
Call me what you like
As long as you call me time and again
Feel the presence of the aura
of the man none to compare
Loveless dying
For a chance just to touch a hand
or a moment to share
Can't deny the urge that makes them
want to lose themselves to the debonair one
Hold me back the simple fact is
that i'm all that and i'm always near
one sexy can't perplex me now
You know who's rawas if you didn't know before
I know what I want and I want it now
I want you and then I want a little more
Call him Mr. Raider
call him Mr. Wrong
Call him Mr. Vain
Call him Mr. Raider
call him Mr. Wrong
Call him insane
He'd say: I know what I want
and I want it now
I want you cause I'm Mr. Vain
I know what I want and I want it now
I want you cause I'm Mr. Vain
Girls are all over the world
they hope and pray and die for men
Like me cause I'm the one
begotten son that breaks the mould
Get a look at male epitome
Style has never seen
That makes you want to grab and hold
and squeeze real tight
Whose gonna be the one to save
you from yourself
When you wanna take a bite
please oh baby please
You beg you want you say
You got to get some caught
Up in the charm that I laid on thick
And now there's nowhere
to run
just another fish to fit the
worm on the hook of my line
Yeah I keep many females
longing for a chance to win my heart
with S E X and plenty
