The Things We Call Mundane

PROMPT #443

This week, I would like you to focus on the MUNDANE

and make it sound as boring or as interesting or as value-adding as you want.

Reena’s Xploration Challenge #443

The Things We Call Mundane

The kettle boils.

The washing machine turns.

The dog needs feeding.

Someone has misplaced their keys.

Again.

There are dishes in the sink,
messages waiting to be answered,
appointments written on calendars
and a shopping list containing something
I will inevitably forget.

Nothing extraordinary happens.

Or so we tell ourselves.

We wait for the moments worth remembering—

the birthdays,
the weddings,
the journeys,
the achievements,
the days when something happens
that deserves a photograph.

Meanwhile, life is happening quietly
between them.

It is happening in the first cup of coffee.

In Did you sleep well?

In feeding animals who somehow know
exactly what time dinner should be.

In familiar footsteps in another room.

In the same road travelled
for the hundredth time.

In laundry folded
for people we love.

We call these things mundane
because they happen so often
that we stop noticing them.

Until they stop.

Then suddenly we would give anything
for one more ordinary morning.

One more cup left beside the sink.

One more familiar voice calling
from another room.

One more completely unremarkable day.

Perhaps the mundane does run the world.

The extraordinary gets the photographs.

The wild and wonderful gets the stories.

But ordinary moments
build a life.

Maybe we have misunderstood
the mundane all along.

It isn’t the empty space
between important moments.

It is where most of the important moments
were hiding.
