The River Knows

PROMPT #442
Reena’s Xploration Challenge #442

The River Knows
There comes a moment when even light becomes heavy.
Not because it has changed,
but because we have carried too much darkness
to remember how to receive it.
So we fall.
Not always into despair.
Sometimes into ourselves.
Into silence.
Into the place where roots grow
before wings remember they exist.
The current does not ask permission.
It gathers what we cling to,
what we fear,
what we thought defined us,
and carries them downstream.
We can resist until we are exhausted.
Or we can float.
Trusting that the river
has travelled this path
long before we arrived.
Then comes the break.
The sound is frightening.
The old shell cracks.
The old story shatters.
The old self loosens its grip.
Yet it is through that opening
that light finally enters,
not as something to carry—
but as something
we have become able
to hold.
Perhaps life was never asking us
to remain unbroken.
Perhaps it was asking us
to become transparent enough
for the light,
the fall,
the current,
and every break
to shape us
into who we were always meant to be.
