The Rapids Ahead
The river had been serene so far, but ahead, their simple raft faced some serious rapids.
The water changed first.
Its gentle murmur deepened into a restless roar, carrying a warning long before the white foam came into view.
She tightened her grip on the paddle.
“We could turn back.”
He looked over his shoulder.
“The current won’t let us.”
For a while, neither of them spoke.
The quiet stretch of river had made everything seem easy. They had drifted beneath overhanging trees, laughed at dragonflies skimming the surface, and watched the sky reflected so perfectly in the water that it was impossible to tell where the river ended and the heavens began.
Now the river demanded something different.
Not trust in the water.
Trust in each other.
The raft jolted as the first wave struck.
Water splashed over the edge.
She gasped.
He smiled.
“Still with me?”
She nodded.
“Always.”
The rapids threw them from side to side, twisting the raft until every instinct screamed to let go.
But they didn’t.
Stroke by stroke.
Breath by breath.
Together.
And then…
Almost as suddenly as it had begun, the river calmed.
The silence afterward felt different.
Not the innocence of the morning.
The peace that follows surviving something together.
She looked back at the churning water disappearing around the bend.
“I was afraid we’d lose everything.”
He reached across the raft and took her hand.
“We did.”
She stared at him.
“Our fear.”
The river carried it away.
Ahead, the water shimmered once more beneath the afternoon sun.
Still unknown.
Still beautiful.
And somehow…
they were stronger than the current that had tried to break them.
