Today reminded me how quickly life can change.

Every Wednesday I drive my husband and one of my daughters to the airport so my husband can fly to Las Palmas for his hospital appointment. It has become part of our routine, even though I have never been particularly comfortable driving on the roads here in Fuerteventura.

On the way home, I passed a trailer that had rolled off the road and landed upside down. It was a stark reminder that things can go wrong in an instant.

Later, as we were driving back from the airport, it almost became our turn.

A car decided to overtake six or seven vehicles in one go. Suddenly, it was coming straight towards us in our lane. There wasn’t time to think, analyse or panic. Instinct simply took over.

I steered onto the shoulder at around 90 km/h. Thankfully, the driver behind me wasn’t tailgating and was able to move over too. Within seconds, it was over.

My husband, who was a firefighter for many years and has seen more road accidents than anyone should, looked at me and quietly said, “Your reflexes saved us today.”

For the rest of the journey home, every oncoming car made my heart race. My mind knew they were in their own lane, but my body wasn’t convinced. The adrenaline is still with me as I write this.

It made me think about instinct.

We often underestimate it, but sometimes our deepest wisdom doesn’t come from thinking. It comes from years of experience, awareness and that split-second response that appears before our conscious mind has even caught up.

Today, instinct took the wheel.

I’m incredibly grateful that we made it home safely. Tonight, my heart is full of gratitude—for quick reflexes, for the driver behind me keeping a safe distance, and for another ordinary Wednesday that, despite everything, ended with all of us still together.

Sometimes we don’t realise how precious an ordinary day is until it almost becomes something else.

Maggie, your hands knew what to do before your mind caught up. That’s not luck. That’s the body’s wisdom accumulated through years of attention, years of being present on the road. Your nervous system recognized danger before consciousness even arrived, and it responded.

What struck me most is how your husband, who has seen what happens when instinct fails, recognized what you did in that moment. “Your reflexes saved us today.” He knows the price of those reflexes not being there. He knows what the alternative looks like.

And then that beautiful full-circle moment at the end: the adrenaline still with you, your heart racing at every oncoming car, your mind knowing they’re in their lanes but your body not quite believing it yet. That’s the aftershock of being alive when you could have died. That’s gratitude in its purest form.

Thank goodness for instinct. Thank goodness for safe distances and quick reflexes and ordinary Wednesdays that stay ordinary. I’m so grateful you’re all still together.

      Thank you my friend 💜

I’m grateful it ended well , but still shaken…

The driver behind me was shaken too. We were lucky we didn’t have more cars behind us.
