The Reserved Place
The old man arrived before sunset and took his usual place on the wooden stool beside the piano.
The seat had been reserved for years, though nobody could remember who first decided it belonged to him.
He had once sung in the village choir,his voice grand enough to fill the rafters and make every candle flame twinkle.
Now he was often ill, and his songs came softly,but the room still seemed to turn toward him whenever he began.
One by one, people gathered together.
Someone raised a glass and called,“Cheers to old songs and the hearts that remember them.”
He smiled.
There was no sadness in the silence that followed,only peace.
He leaned back, closed his eyes,and allowed the music to carry him somewhere beyond pain,somewhere gentle enough to rest.
And when the final note faded,his place remained warm.
As though love itself had decided to stay.
