Universally Perceived Pleasurable Flavor
Sweet Child O’ Mine — Guns N’ Roses (1987)
Some songs become classics from the very first note.
For this week’s Song Lyric Sunday theme, featuring songs that mention candy, honey, sugar, or sweet, I chose Sweet Child O’ Mine by Guns N’ Roses.
The opening guitar riff is one of the most recognisable in rock history. Even after all these years, it still makes me smile whenever I hear it.
Released in 1987 on the band’s debut album Appetite for Destruction, the song was written by the members of Guns N’ Roses: Axl Rose, Slash, Izzy Stradlin, Duff McKagan, and Steven Adler. What began as a guitar exercise by Slash eventually became the band’s only #1 hit on the US Billboard Hot 100, and it remains one of the defining rock songs of the 1980s.
Although Guns N’ Roses were known for their hard rock image, Sweet Child O’ Mine reveals a softer side. Inspired by Axl Rose’s girlfriend at the time, the song is filled with affection, admiration, and memories of innocence.
People are sometimes surprised by how varied my musical taste is.
One moment I’m painting while listening to Vivaldi’s Four Seasons.
The next, I’m turning up Guns N’ Roses, Rainbow, or Dio.
Then I’ll happily switch to house music, musicals, or a beautiful ballad.
For me, music has never been about fitting into one genre.
It’s about how a song makes me feel.
Every style has something unique to offer, whether it’s the elegance of classical music, the energy of rock, or the rhythm of dance music.
Sweet Child O’ Mine has stood the test of time because, beneath the powerful guitars and unforgettable vocals, it’s simply a love song.
Sometimes the sweetest songs don’t need sugar at all.
With love, coffee, poetry, and stardust,
