Day 26 – What’s the most awkward work scenario that’s happened to you?

One moment from my working life has stayed with me for decades.

Growing up in Norway, I was often seen as “the foreigner,” even though my mother is Norwegian.

After qualifying as a children’s nurse, I later worked in schools and kindergartens, mainly supporting children with disabilities or chronic illnesses.

One day in the teachers’ lounge, we were discussing the rise in cases of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS). I shared what we had learned during my nursing education, including the latest research and recommendations.

One of my former teachers looked at me and said, “How could you know all this? You were the one who struggled so much in school.”

I was completely stunned. I couldn’t find a single word to say.

Before I had a chance to respond, the headmaster spoke up. He firmly told him that if he had nothing positive to contribute, he could leave.

That moment taught me something I’ll never forget.

People may remember who you were years ago, but they don’t always see who you’ve become. Thankfully, there are also people who are willing to stand up for you when it matters.

Excellent post! Some of us “learn as we go” and others like to draw “conclusions” that they can comfortably stick with. The best we can do is to connect with “lifelong learners” and dismiss the rest. ;-)

I cost the printing firm, where I was working, a lot of money when they had to reprint a 250 page book. I blamed the proof reader but my boss blamed me!
