What’s a promise you made to yourself that you’ve actually kept?
The most important promise I ever made to myself was this:
Never drink alcohol again.
The last time I had a drink was over ten years ago, and it’s a promise I’ve never broken.
Growing up surrounded by alcoholism in parts of my family, I saw firsthand how easily alcohol could become a way of trying to escape pain.
For a while, I believed it might solve my own problems too.
It didn’t.
Instead, I realised that healing never comes from running away from our struggles—it comes from facing them, however difficult that may be.
Over the years, I chose a different path.
I learned to talk about my experiences, to seek help when I needed it, and to express myself through music, writing, creativity, and the people I love.
Looking back, that promise wasn’t about giving something up.
It was about giving myself a better future.
Every year that passes reminds me that some promises aren’t limitations.
They’re acts of self-respect.
The strongest promises are often the ones we make quietly to ourselves—and keep, one day at a time.
With love, coffee, poetry, and stardust,
