Light Beyond the Cell

Every morning, Elias counted the footsteps.

One guard. Two guards. Silence.

The open doors mocked him. None led outside. Each revealed another soul waiting for a pardon that never came.

Only the far doorway held light.

“Hope,” whispered the old man beside him.

“No,” Elias replied. “Choice.”

When the alarms echoed through the prison, everyone hid behind stone and iron.

Everyone except Elias.

He walked toward the light, expecting bullets.

Instead, warm sunlight kissed his face.

The prison had never been locked.

Only fear had held the keys.

There’s a Jewish proverb that says: “We are all prisoners. But we sit on the keys.”

Maggie, realistic character study. They win when they convince us to stay in our cells.

A lovely allegory of life, the fear of the unknown: Yet, if only we had the courage to look.
