Mid-Summer State of Mind

Rainbow in the Dark — Dio (1983)

Every now and then, a song reminds us of a different version of ourselves.

For this week’s Song Lyric Sunday theme—an artist born in July—I chose Ronnie James Dio and one of my favourite songs, Rainbow in the Dark.

It was a difficult choice between this and Holy Diver, but in the end, Rainbow in the Dark won.

Perhaps because it has stayed with me for so many years.

Like many people, I first discovered Ronnie James Dio through Rainbow and later Black Sabbath. His voice was unmistakable—powerful, dramatic, and full of emotion.

Then came his solo career.

Rainbow in the Dark, released in 1983 on Dio’s debut solo album Holy Diver, became one of his signature songs and remains one of the defining anthems of classic heavy metal.

The song was written by Ronnie James Dio together with guitarist Vivian Campbell, bassist Jimmy Bain, and drummer Vinny Appice.

Although Ronnie James Dio became famous through Rainbow, Black Sabbath, and later his own band, he always brought something uniquely his own to every stage he stepped onto.

I’ll admit…

Dio was part of my rebellious years.

While other people expected one thing from me, I found myself drawn to the energy of hard rock and heavy metal.

There was something wonderfully liberating about turning up the volume and losing yourself in music that refused to apologise for being loud.

Looking back now, I smile at that younger version of myself.

She was searching.

Growing.

Trying to find where she belonged.

Perhaps that’s another reason Rainbow in the Dark has never left me.

Beneath the guitars and soaring vocals lies a feeling many of us recognise—the feeling of standing alone while trying to find your place in the world.

Ronnie James Dio was born on July 10, 1942, and over a remarkable career he helped shape the sound of heavy metal through Rainbow, Black Sabbath, Heaven & Hell, and his own band, Dio. Although he passed away in 2010 after a battle with stomach cancer, his music continues to inspire generations of rock and metal fans.

Music doesn’t always have to be gentle to touch the heart.

Sometimes it arrives with soaring vocals, powerful guitars, and enough energy to shake the walls.

And sometimes…

those become the songs we never stop playing.

Thoughtful lyrics and loving the guitar, especially the solo. Dio has voice made for rock and roll. Sorry to hear he passed away so young :(

Dio was such a force of nature and always a big favorite of mine, whether with Elf, Rainbow or Black Sabbath. He had that one-of-a-kind voice that was immediately recognizable and sang with an incredible power that came so naturally. I almost featured him today but since I write a lot about hard rock and metal, I chose to go with someone else. I’m glad you featured him today, Maggie. Great write up!
