The Lucky Number
The roulette wheel spun with its familiar whisper, carrying every hope, every superstition, every desperate dream.
“Red seventeen,” the man beside me muttered.
“No,” the elderly woman smiled, placing a single chip on 13. “I’ve waited forty years for today.”
The croupier called, “No more bets.”
Silence settled as the ball danced around the wheel.
It bounced… skipped… hesitated…
13.
The old woman didn’t cheer. She simply gathered her winnings, tucked them into her handbag, and stood.
“Leaving already?” someone asked.
She smiled toward the empty chair beside her.
“He always said we’d win on our anniversary,” she whispered. “I promised him I’d collect… even if he couldn’t.”
