July 2 – Do you have a work wife/husband? If so, describe them. If you’re retired, do you still keep in touch with your former colleagues?
I’ve been on early medical retirement since 1998 because of my health, so I never really had a work husband or work wife.
In 2009, I worked one day a week in a lovely herbal shop. It wasn’t so much about earning money—it was about getting out of the house and being me, not just a mother or a partner. It was good for my soul.
My husband also receives a disability pension, so we’ve both had to adapt to a different pace of life.
The people I stay in touch with the most are from the herbal shop. We became friends beyond work, and my former boss even came to visit us when we were living in Gran Canaria. That meant a great deal to me.
From my years working in schools and kindergartens, I still have a few former colleagues on Facebook. Even if life takes us in different directions, it’s always nice to see familiar faces pop up now and then.
Looking back, I think this is also why it felt relatively easy to pack up our life in Norway and move to the Canary Islands in 2011. We weren’t leaving jobs behind—we were choosing a better quality of life. A more stable climate has made a real difference for our health, and despite the challenges life has brought, I’ve never regretted making that move.
Sometimes the biggest changes begin with the simple decision to put your well-being first.
