Tomorrow Remembered

#missysmadchallenge

The blackout lasted only seven minutes.

Long enough for every light to die.

Long enough for every clock to stop.

Long enough for the town to wake up remembering something that had never happened.

At breakfast, no one spoke at first.

Then someone whispered,

“Did you dream about the bridge?”

Every face around the café lifted.

They had.

Not as a dream.

As a memory.

Children remembered running.

Firefighters remembered smoke.

Parents remembered calling names that hadn’t yet been shouted.

Even the old woman who hadn’t left her house in years remembered standing beneath a sky painted orange with fire.

By noon, the whole town was telling the same story.

Every detail matched.

The time.

The weather.

The terrified faces.

The bridge collapsing into the river.

Only one problem remained.

The bridge still stood.

Officials dismissed it as mass hysteria.

Shared suggestion.

A strange side effect of the blackout.

Until 6:43 the following evening.

The first crack echoed across the valley.

Within seconds, every road leading to the bridge was empty.

No cars.

No buses.

No pedestrians.

Everyone had remembered.

Moments later, the bridge gave way exactly as they had seen it.

No one died.

When reporters asked how an entire town had known to stay away, no one could explain.

Some called it coincidence.

Others called it a miracle.

But every year, when the lights flicker for just a heartbeat on the anniversary of the blackout,

the people of that little town fall silent.

Because somewhere deep inside them,

they still wonder…

What will we remember next?

Your challenge for this week:

After a blackout, residents of a small town wake up with shared memories of an event that didn’t happen—yet.
