Take Me Home, Country Roads — John Denver (1971)

Spend More Time Outdoors

Song Lyric Sunday: Great American Campout

Some songs remind us of places.

Others remind us of people.

Whenever I hear Take Me Home, Country Roads, I don’t first think of mountains, forests, or winding country roads.

I think of my father.

For this week’s Song Lyric Sunday, celebrating the Great American Campout and the joy of the outdoors, I chose one of John Denver’s most beloved songs.

My father has always loved John Denver’s music, and hearing Take Me Home, Country Roads instantly takes me back to childhood. It’s funny how music can do that. One familiar melody, and suddenly you’re remembering voices, laughter, and moments you didn’t realise would become treasured memories.

Although the song celebrates the beauty of the countryside, I think its true message is something even deeper.

It’s about home.

Not just where we live, but where our hearts feel at peace.

Written by Bill Danoff, Taffy Nivert, and John Denver, Take Me Home, Country Roads was released in 1971 and quickly became one of John Denver’s signature songs. It reached #2 on the US Billboard Hot 100 and has remained one of the world’s most loved songs about home, nature, and belonging.

The lyrics mention the mountains of West Virginia, but the feeling reaches far beyond one place.

For me, home has worn many faces.

I was born in London, grew up in Norway, and have spent many years making a life under the sunshine and open skies of Fuerteventura.

Each place has left its mark on me.

Yet sometimes, home is not a country at all.

Sometimes it is the sound of a familiar voice.

A song your father loved.

A memory carried quietly through the years.

Perhaps that is why music matters so much.

It preserves moments long after time has moved on.

As we celebrate the beauty of the outdoors this week, I’m reminded that nature has always had a way of grounding us. Whether it’s mountains, the sea, forests, or simply watching the sunset, stepping outside often reminds us of what truly matters.

And sometimes, all it takes is a familiar song to take us home again.

Great choice, Maggie and despite its deep connection to West Virginia, this song was actually inspired by a backroad that was a two-lane stretch in Gaithersburg, Maryland.  Back in the late 1970s, the folk duo and couple Fat City, which consisted of Bill Danoff and Taffy Nivert, was headed to a family gathering when inspiration struck.  As Bill was playing his guitar in the passenger seat, he began coming up with lyrics for a song intended for Johnny Cash to record.  When the duo got to the “Almost heaven…” lyric, they were planning on using Massachusetts (because that’s where Bill is from), but it didn’t quite roll off the tongue like West Virginia did. This song is a perfect fit for the theme today.

I love the story behind the lyrics . I know all about how words don’t roll off the tongue, and need to change the lyrics 😊

Maggie, I almost chose a John Denver song for the prompt. He epitomizes a love of nature like no other in his music. I sing this song like a mantra. Thanks for choosing it.
