Poetics: A Tale of Two Images

When the Sky Falls into the Earth

The sparkler sings with a thousand bright tongues,

scattering stars into the waiting dark.

Each crackle a celebration of becoming,

a brief rebellion against night.

Meanwhile,

the earth opens its dry lips, splitting beneath a relentless sun.

No applause. No music.

Only silence settling into every fracture.

Yet both know what it means to break—

one from abundance,

one from longing.

And somewhere between the burst of light and the cracked clay,

the same prayer rises

let something new be born from this.

Mish is our host at the dVerse Poets Pub for this week’s Tuesday’s Poetics, with a tale of two images: a challenge based on juxtaposition, a contrast between subjects, settings, ideas or moods that “not only highlights their differences but can also uncover unexpected similarities or connections” and “strengthen an argument, stir up emotions and create an impactful statement”.Our challenge is to use two images that create juxtaposition as a foundation on which to build our poems, combining sensory details that conflict with each other and blending the concrete with the abstract.

I love the line about the sparkler being a ‘brief rebellion against night, Maggie, and the prayer rising ‘somewhere between the burst of light and the cracked clay’.

Well done, Maggie. The irony of opposites that give the same message.
