Which languages do you speak and how did that impact your life?

💫 Daily Prompt 24.06.2026 Dailyprompt-2802
Language has been one of the greatest gifts in my life.
I speak both English and Norwegian fluently, and because of my Scandinavian roots, I also understand Swedish and Danish. During college, I studied Old Norse, the language of the Vikings and the foundation of modern Norwegian. It gave me a deeper appreciation for history, mythology, and the stories that shaped the Nordic world.
Living in Spain for many years has encouraged me to learn Spanish. I understand much more than I speak, but each conversation helps me grow in confidence and connect with the local community.
At school, I studied German, which opened another window into European culture and language.
One of the most meaningful languages I learned was sign language while working with children with special needs. It taught me that communication is about far more than words. A gesture, a facial expression, or a simple sign can sometimes say more than a thousand spoken sentences.
Knowing different languages has allowed me to connect with people from different countries, cultures, and walks of life. It has helped me travel, work, learn, and understand the world from perspectives beyond my own.
Perhaps the greatest lesson language has taught me is that communication is not only about speaking—it’s about listening, understanding, and finding ways to connect with one another.
Every language opens a new door, but understanding another person is the key that unlocks it.
