Song Lyric Sunday: Dads or Grads

Papa Don’t Preach — Madonna (1986)

Some songs tell a story.

Others open a conversation.

For this week’s Song Lyric Sunday theme of Dads or Grads, I chose Papa Don’t Preach by Madonna.

Released in 1986 as part of her True Blue album, the song was written by Brian Elliot and became one of Madonna’s biggest hits, reaching #1 on both the US Billboard Hot 100 and the UK Singles Chart.

At the time, the song generated plenty of discussion because of its subject matter. Yet beneath the controversy is something timeless: the relationship between a father and daughter.

The moment when a child grows up and begins making their own choices.

The moment when parents realize they can no longer make decisions for us.

And the moment when we hope they will still love us, even when they don’t agree.

That is what makes this song resonate with me.

My father is Greek and grew up with strong traditions and strong opinions. He believed in family, responsibility, and doing things the “right” way.

To this day, he likes to remind me that he is not entirely happy that I have been married twice!

I always laugh when he says it, because after all these years it has become part of our father-daughter story.

Life rarely follows the plans our parents make for us.

My father hoped I would marry a Greek man and follow a more traditional path. Instead, life took me on a different journey — one filled with lessons, mistakes, growth, heartbreak, healing, and ultimately love.

Looking back, I have made choices I am proud of and a few that taught me valuable lessons. But perhaps that is what growing up really means.

Not living the life someone else imagined for us.

But finding the courage to live our own.

That doesn’t mean we stop loving our parents.

It simply means we become ourselves.

More than anything, Papa Don’t Preach reminds me that growing up is not about rebellion.

It is about finding your own voice.

And sometimes, even after all these years, it is about smiling and saying:

“Papa, I know you worried. But I had to live my own life.”

Maggie, I like how you personally connected with the song. I remember when Madonna was always on the charts. She certainly went her own way and excelled because of it.
