I painted this in 2024 without knowing I was painting my own weather

Color My World

People ask about color
as if it lives politely
inside neat lines

but color has never arrived
that way for me

it comes wild

purple for mystery
for intuition
for unseen things
that somehow still speak

gold for survival
for mornings
I never thought
I would reach

blue for oceans crossed
for longing
for distance
for healing

pink for softness
still surviving

red for love
that refuses silence

and black

black for the sky before stars
for grief
for beginnings
no one notices

End note: Inspired by my own painting and the emotional colors life leaves behind.

Get Out Your Crayons and Come Color with Me!

Lillian here, asking you a question, have you heard the words “color my world”? Well, that’s what we’re going to do for today’s Poetics. So, have you guessed the prompt? It actually can go a number of ways….you can write a colorful poem (choose your own meaning for “colorful” and be sure to share that meaning in an end note to your poem); OR you can write a poem that emphasizes one or two colors OR a poem that delves into the shades of one primary color. You could write a seasonal poem evoking the colors you associate with spring or summer or autumn or winter. You can find a piece of artwork and write an ekphrastic poem that leans heavily on its colors. You can describe what you think a red Monday would be like; or a chartreuse Wednesday; or a cerulean blue Tuesday. So many ways to play with your crayons and words today! No required length, form, or rhyme scheme. Just be sure it’s colorful!

What an AMAZING response to the prompt! I am most especially smitten with these lines and their spacing:

    “and black

black for the sky before stars
    for grief
    for beginnings
    no one notices”

I always connect black with funerals so I am especially struck with your connection here to beginnings no one notices.

So very glad you posted to the prompt!

In my opinion we can’t live without them both 😊

Wonderful, Maggie! I agree with ‘purple for mystery / for intuition’ and ‘blue for oceans crossed / for longing / for distance / for healing’, and my favourite colour black ‘for the sky before stars’.
