Queen of the Gods
Sonique — Sky & It Feels So Good

Some artists simply become part of your life story.
Not just someone you listen to…
But someone whose music quietly walks beside you through life’s hardest chapters and happiest beginnings.
For this week’s Song Lyric Sunday theme — an artist born in June — I chose Sonique, born June 21, 1968.
For many, Sonique is remembered as one of the unforgettable voices of early 2000s dance music.
But for me, she was always more than that.
As a DJ, musician, and songwriter, Sonique felt different.
Perhaps that is one reason her music stayed so close to my heart.
Coming from my own DJ background in the 90s, I understood something about the world behind the music — the energy, the rhythm, the way one song could instantly change the atmosphere in a room.
Music was never just sound.
It was emotion.
Memory.
Escape.
And sometimes…
survival.
Sonique was also involved in writing her music, helping shape songs that felt deeply personal rather than manufactured. Perhaps that is why her songs never simply played in the background for me.
They became chapters of my life.
The first was Sky.
This became my soundtrack when I finally escaped my abusive ex-husband.
There are songs that somehow understand what words cannot explain.
Songs that arrive exactly when life feels broken.
For me, Sky carried freedom.
Pain.
Hope.
And the strange feeling of finally breathing again after surviving something that nearly stole who I was.
When life had become heavy, the music somehow reminded me to keep looking upward.
To believe there could still be something beyond survival.
Then came another chapter.
Another song.
It Feels So Good.
And perhaps this one means even more.
Because it became the soundtrack to opening my heart again.
After everything, I had not expected love to find me.
Yet somehow, life surprised me.
This song reminds me of falling in love with the man who became my husband — the person who helped me trust again, laugh again, and believe in love again.
Twenty-three years later…
We are still here.
Still standing together.
Still choosing each other.
Sonique found worldwide success with both songs. It Feels So Good became her international breakthrough, reaching #1 on the UK Singles Chart in 2000 and charting across Europe and beyond. Sky followed as another major success, reaching the UK Top 5 and becoming one of her signature tracks.
And perhaps that is the magic of music.
Some songs entertain us.
Others stay.
They quietly hold our memories.
The heartbreak.
The healing.
The moments we almost gave up.
And the moments life slowly begins again.
