Green, Green Grass of Home — Elvis Presley (1967)
Sometimes a song is more than music.
Sometimes it becomes a doorway back in time.
For this week’s Song Lyric Sunday prompt, I chose Green, Green Grass of Home by Elvis Presley — a song that instantly brings me back to childhood.
I remember my parents singing it.
Dancing to it.
The kind of memory wrapped in warmth, where music filled the room and somehow made ordinary moments feel magical.
Back then, we didn’t realise we were collecting memories.
Yet decades later, a single melody can bring them rushing back.
Green, Green Grass of Home was written by American songwriter Curly Putman in 1965 and first recorded by singer Johnny Darrell. However, it became world famous through Tom Jones’ 1966 version, which reached #1 on the UK charts and turned the song into an international classic.
Elvis Presley later recorded his own version in 1967 for his album Green, Green Grass of Home, bringing his unmistakable warmth and emotion to the song.
At first listen, it sounds comforting and nostalgic — a longing for home, familiar places, and the people waiting there.
“Yes, they’ll all come to meet me, arms reaching, smiling sweetly…”
But underneath, there is also sadness.
A reminder that sometimes home is not only a place.
Sometimes it is memory.
Sometimes it is the people we miss.
And perhaps that is why songs like this stay with us.
They become time machines.
A few notes…
And suddenly we are children again.
Standing in a room where our parents are still singing.
Still dancing.
Still young.
