functional

Functional.
Such an ordinary word.
Until something vital stops working.
Yesterday,my husband’s fistula collapsed.
The quiet lifeline that keeps treatment possible.
And suddenly—functional became everything.
Hospitals.
Waiting rooms.
Emergency decisions.
Fear tucked quietly behind brave faces.
Today, they placed an emergency line in his neck,
so treatment could continue.
Tomorrow, they fly him to Las Palmas,
hoping they can repair what failed.
And perhaps that is the strange truth about being human—
we only notice what quietly functions
when life reminds us how fragile everything can be.
But love…
Love stays functional.
Holding hands.
Making tea.
Waiting beside fear.
Believing in healing
even when tomorrow feels uncertain.

With love
