The Black Sheep

They always spoke of him in softer voices.
Too wild.
Too stubborn.
Too different from the rest.
While the others learned to graze where they were told,
he wandered close to hedges,
watching skies no one else noticed.
Yet somehow,
when storms rolled in,
it was always the black sheep
who stood
closest—shielding the smaller ones,
keeping watch.
Families have a way of misunderstanding the ones born to stand apart.
But difference is not failure.
Sometimes the black sheep is only carrying the courage the others were afraid to grow.
And perhaps that is why the lamb stays close—
already knowing which heart feels safest.
