The Weight of Small Things

Steven had a bad day and just needed something to make him feel better.

At first, he thought it would take something big.

A drink. A distraction. Loud music. Anything strong enough to drown out the slow accumulation of disappointments that had followed him home like rainwater soaking through old shoes.

The day had started badly and somehow found ways to become worse.

A missed call he should have answered. Coffee spilled across paperwork. Words exchanged too sharply with someone who probably didn’t deserve it. And then the quiet humiliation of pretending he was fine when he clearly wasn’t.

By evening, he sat in his car outside the supermarket, staring at the automatic doors opening and closing.

People moved in and out carrying ordinary things.

Bread. Flowers. Dinner.

Lives continuing.

He almost drove away.

Instead, he went inside.

Not because he knew what he needed.

Because he didn’t.

He wandered without purpose until something caught his eye near the bakery.

Fresh cinnamon buns.

Still warm.

Ridiculous, really.

He almost laughed at himself.

But he bought one anyway.

And on impulse, flowers.

Not for anyone else.

For the kitchen table.

Back home, he made tea, placed the flowers in an old jar, and sat quietly while the evening softened around him.

The cinnamon tasted like childhood. Like safety. Like the memory of bad days ending eventually.

Nothing had been fixed.

The missed call still mattered. Tomorrow would still arrive with its unfinished problems.

But for the first time all day, his shoulders loosened.

Sometimes healing doesn’t arrive dramatically.

Sometimes it smells faintly of cinnamon and reminds you that surviving the day is enough.

With love
