The Song We Kept

The old radio played a song we once danced to, moving softly through the kitchen like memory had learned how to breathe again.

You wore the silver ring, the one I thought meant forever.

But forever is strange—sometimes it stays, sometimes it quietly fell apart while we were too busy surviving to notice.

There is a kind of nostalgia that tastes like cold tea, left untouched too long, holding warmth that is only memory now.

Maybe we were wrong, or maybe love simply changes shape.

The pain came in waves, echoing through me like sound trapped inside a barrel, rolling long after the storm had passed.

And yet—I have never hated what we were.

Some loves do not disappear.

They simply become songs you still pause for when they find you unexpectedly on the radio.

With love

Another lovely piece, and one I can identify with to a degree too.
Love does indeed change shape, and if you’re lucky, you meld together, not apart.
Your comparison of nostalgia being like cold tea is insightful. Personally, I prefer mine hot, and if it cools below a certain temperature before I touch it, I won’t drink it. It turns my stomach, yet nostalgia doesn’t, I have too many good memories for that, though of course there are some bad ones.
    Thanks for joining in.

It was just last week my hubby said it would be lovely to dance with you…

Three years has gone since his accident, bedridden. And I’m still grieving the loss of “our life”.

I am so sorry Maggie. It must be difficult. Do you get any care assistance?
Hubby’s mobility has deteriorated terribly over the past few years and I don’t know how he keeps going sometimes. We have been able to adjust, and having the mobility scooter means he can take Maya out for long walks.

Sadly there is no care assistance here, but I’m lucky my daughters can help with the heavy lifting.
Last week he got a new wheelchair, but sadly not electric, that you need to pay for yourself.

I’m happy your husband can take Maya out for long walks, I’m sure she’s happy with that ❤️

:) Very. As soon as it comes out of the big shed, she’s showing him where the gate is!
