The Space Between

We stood there
as if the room itself
was remembering us.

Not mother and child exactly—
not anymore.
Not strangers either.

Between us
hung all the things
that never learned how to become words.

The curtains breathed softly
toward an unseen window.
Roots climbed where walls should have held.

Even the floor
felt uncertain,
black and white squares unable to decide whether this was home
or memory.

She reached for my hand once.

Or perhaps
I only remember wanting her to.

There are distances
that cannot be measured by footsteps.

Only by silence,
by absence,
by the fragile thread
still trying
to grow between two souls standing in the same room.

An awkward dynamic. When you’re not even sure that you like people that you love. Blessings. <3

      Thank you Susan . ❤️😘

Yes, awkward indeed. We are learned to love our parents , no matter what. But like? Luckily we don’t need to do that of obligation.

A thought provoking, beautifully conceived poem. This line: “black and white squares unable to decide whether this was home or memory” dredged up many a memory for me. Most of them good.
