Borrowed Hooves

The pony’s hooves clicked softly against the city pavement, a strange rhythm among traffic and concrete. People turned to stare as the boy hurried forward, one hand gripping the rope, the other tucked against the cold.

To everyone else, it looked misplaced—a piece of countryside wandering through the wrong story.

But the pony walked calmly beside him, mane tossing like it remembered open fields the city had long forgotten.

At the crossing, the boy paused and rested his forehead briefly against the animal’s neck.

“I miss home too,” he whispered.

The traffic lights changed. Cars surged forward impatiently.

Yet for one small moment, standing there between steel and stone, the city smelled faintly of hay and rain-soaked stables again.

There are lots of horse and buggies here. I always love hearing them clicking along the road. A wonderful sound.
