For dVerse poetics Tuesday. Merril, our host, has given us a list of rose names to use in our poem of any form.

What We Call Them

They gave them names as if that could hold them—

Peace
for something that never stayed long enough
to settle in the bones.

Ebb Tide
for the way love pulls back without warning,
leaving salt where warmth once lived.

Queen of Hearts
for the illusion of control,
for crowns that slip when no one is looking.

No Surrender
for the part of me
that kept standing
even when the ground did not agree.

And somewhere,
quietly,
almost forgotten—

Desdemona
blooming anyway,
not for tragedy,
but for the softness
that refused to harden.

What’s in a name?

Only this—
we try to make sense
of what we cannot keep,
by calling it something beautiful.

I love how you gave each rose name its own stanza, Maggie, your interpretation of each name, especially ‘Ebb Tide’ and poor ‘Desdemona’, and the final stanza. I wonder what roses would call themselves and each other.

      Thank you Kim 💜.

I wanted the Roses names shine in their own light / stanza.

I thought every one of them needed ( and wanted ) their own stanza.

Oh, my! There is a beauty here that is empowered by a Rosie the Riveter strength.

    No Surrender
    for the part of me
    that kept standing
even when the ground did not agree.
