Inspired by “Svarta Rosor”

(“Black Roses”)

by Ernst Josephson

“Ty sorgen har nattsvarta rosor.”

“For grief has roses black as night.”

Black Roses

They ask why I am sad today—
as if sorrow keeps a calendar.
But it blooms quietly,
beneath laughter,
behind light.

In my chest
a garden grows
without permission—thorn after thorn
learning my name.

Still—
look closer.

Even grief
makes something
beautiful enough
to bleed for.

So true! 👍 Sadness and sorrows are like black roses that bloom quietly to take laughter away from us. 🥀

    Beautifully written ☺️💜

A stunning poem that resonates, Maggie. I especially love: ‘as if sorrow keeps a calendar.
    But it blooms quietly,
    beneath laughter,
    behind light’.

I wrote it some months ago after reading a book that referenced to the Swedish poem .

I was so surprised when you brought a Swedish poem up as inspiration, I love how you used the line from that poem and made it new (and contemporay)….

Would be intersting to see how it would sound in Swedish.

      Thank you Bjőrn.

I got inspiration to write this after reading one of Margit Sandemo books from the series “Lysets rike ” – where she had the original poem .

    Yes, it’s true.

some of the most beautiful art has come out of grief, the feeling of carrying thorns in ones chest.

and the beginning where you said

as if sorrow keeps a calendar made me chuckle
